Cingular Music: Singing on Key November 2, 2006

I haven’t talked to any of the participants yet, but Cingular’s press release is saying many of the right things about its digital music service(s):

– It’s all about sideloading, not over-the-air downloads
– It acknowledges you might actually have an existing collection of MP3s
– If the song ID system works, that will help alleviate — if not solve completely — the problem of mobile music discovery and search
– It feels like Cingular might actually spend some marketing bucks (a la Apple and Verizon), educating people how cool subscription music services can be. But we’ll see if that’s actually the case.

Of course, on the flip side, Cingular prominently mentions Windows Media DRM compatibility, which Microsoft is in the process of killing with Zune. Oh well.
