How to Pimp Purple Rain on iTunes March 9, 2007

Excellent piece by Nick Wingfield and Ethan Smith in the Journal on how promotional deals work on Apple’s iTunes store. I’ve taken Apple to task in the past for not selling promotional space. It appears it’s subtler than that: there’s a lot of “value,” if not money, changing hands. Exclusives, online extras, that kind of thing. Smart — for both sides, Apple and the labels.

But Apple identifying itself with the “spirit of independent record stores” is pushing it a bit.
