Former Jup Gary Stein has some wise words on viral campaigns in ClickZ. It’s the same with hits in any other entertainment: you probably can’t predict ’em, but you can engineer your machine to ride ’em when they break. And this, on creative, seems on the money, too:

    …(The message) must generate either the pleasure of laughter, the shock of surprise, or the irritation of doubt. That’s pretty much it. You can combine them in exciting new ways…
