Urge/Rhapsody Mash-Up August 21, 2007

The Journal rumors that MTV Networks’ Urge music service is going to combine forces with industry leader RealNetworks’ Rhapsody operation. And Verizon Wireless has a role.

The Journal thinks this would give Urge a broader reach, but wasn’t it the media company that was supposed to bring the audience? That said, Rhapsody is still the leader in the $200M on-demand digital music business (with Napster close behind), and Urge, while a great service, was originally betting on Microsoft technology (and marketing spend) — and had little to show for it.

But in theory, the pair makes for a good combination of programmers.
